While there are some adolescent memories we're happy to leave in the past — RIP, awkward brace-face period — there's one throwback that never goes out of style: the summer pool party. Only, this go-around, we're replacing our Capri-Suns with something a little more potent and trading in our tankinis (remember those?) for a new wave of grown-up swim silhouettes. But, finding your new summer swimsuit is only half the battle; what you wear with it to gallivant in the sun can be just as challenging. So, we took to finding alternative cover-ups that are easy to pull off and give the overplayed linen tunic a much-needed hiatus.
Ahead, we're breaking down how to repurpose pieces in your closet to tastefully (and stylishly) add that effortless layer, without totally obscuring the trendy new womens bathing suits you're itching to show off. And, because your eyes need shielding, too, we paired the perfect shades from Sunglass Hut with each outfit, curating the best shapes and colors for each style (and, let's be honest, you've got to conceal when you accidentally doze off in the lawn chair).
Let's just say covering up has never been quite this appealing.
Balancing Act
If you're sporting a two-piece but want to feel a little more covered, you can add a layer to the top or bottom half of your body. It's a win-win: You'll feel comfortable, but your swimsuit won't go unnoticed. And, since you already know sunglasses are a no-brainer, take it one step further by coordinating those with your swimwear — like pairing neutral shades with a simple, pared-back look.
Half Tucked
A white collared shirt is a perfect example of a piece you probably have on hand that can work as a cover-up, too. If you're wearing a two-piece, leave the top slightly undone to let your bikini peek through, and tuck the bottom of the blouse into your swim trunks — preferably, a high-waisted style. Roll up your sleeves to keep the look casual.
Fancy Pants
If your swimsuit errs on the simple side (whether it's a solid color or a basic silhouette, like this knotted, crop-top style), break out a pair of loose, bold, printed pants to spice it up a bit. Opt for a cropped hem that will keep 'em from dragging on the ground and getting wet. Then, complete the look with statement fuchsia shades and a patterned bucket bag for a daring color combo.
One-Piece Wonders
While it's hard to imagine willfully giving up the skin-baring bikinis we fought so hard to wear way back when, there's a lot to like about this season's flattering, on-trend one-pieces. And, once you're done at the pool, you can wear the style IRL by pairing it with shorts (if it's not totally soaked, that is).

Support System
Whether you're on the bustier side or just want to feel more secure in your suit, a one-piece with supportive cups and a halter strap is the way to go. Not only does it provide slip-free coverage, it's a flattering silhouette, too. Borrow a chambray button-up from your lazy-Sunday outfit rotation to cover up — plus, as denim always does, it'll go with virtually any suit.
Perfect Plunge
If you don't have a one-piece but want the same coverage, a low-cut romper is a playful alternative. To coordinate, pull from the same color palette as your swim suit and make sure the neckline scoops down to just above the waist, so your bandeau still gets some love. And, if you're looking to include more color, accessories go a long way, like these round, purple frames.
Topped Off
Get creative and repurpose items from your everyday wardrobe to go that extra mile (or, shall we say lap?) by the water. Borrow from your workwear for some truly interesting poolside getups. And, if you're wearing a busy swimsuit or topper, bring classic sunglasses into the mix so you don't end up overpowering the look.
In The Trenches
Turns out that shirtdress you wore on Monday can play by the pool, too. The frock's collar and structure will give it a cool trench vibe, and the light material will keep you from getting too hot. Play up the classy look in your sun-blocking accessories, like this fedora-style hat and cat-eye shades.
A Vested Interest
A sleeveless vest is an unexpected way to bring in a little more coverage to your swim style. If you only have a neutral or solid one on hand, and your suit is a solid color, too, throw on a vibrant scarf that plays off of the swimsuit's palette for a bold accent.
